How Much Does It Cost to Spay or Neuter a Cat?
Costs & Planning6 min read

If you have a new kitten or an adult cat who has not been fixed yet, one of the first questions is simple: how much will it cost? Prices vary a lot from clinic to clinic, and it is not always clear what you are paying for. This guide shares the actual prices at Happy Paws & Claws in Englewood, Ohio, explains what is included, and walks you through the optional extras so there are no surprises.
Cat Spay and Neuter Prices at Happy Paws & Claws
These are the current prices at our Englewood clinic:
- Cat spay (female): $246.75 to $331.89
- Cat neuter (male): $131.35 to $153.38
A spay costs more than a neuter because it is a bigger surgery. In a spay, the veterinarian enters the abdomen to remove the reproductive organs. A neuter in a male cat is a shorter, simpler procedure. Your exact price is confirmed with you before surgery, and current prices are always listed on our pricing page.
What Is Included in the Price
When you compare prices, it helps to know what is part of the surgery and what is extra. Every cat spay at our clinic includes:
- Surgical laser
- IV catheter
- Monitoring by a licensed nurse throughout the procedure, including EKG, blood oxygen (SpO2), blood pressure, carbon dioxide (ETCO2), heart rate, breathing rate and temperature
- Post-op therapy laser
- Ear cleaning and nail trim while your cat is already relaxed
Cat neuters include the same nurse monitoring, post-op therapy laser, ear cleaning and nail trim. Because a cat neuter is a much shorter procedure, it does not include the surgical laser or IV catheter, which helps keep the price lower.
Continuous monitoring by a licensed nurse matters. Anesthesia is very safe for most healthy cats, and having a trained person watching your cat's vital signs the whole time is a big part of keeping it that way.
Optional Add-Ons
Some extras are optional and depend on your cat and your preferences. These are priced separately:
- Pre-op bloodwork (pets under 7 years): $112.31. Bloodwork checks how organs like the liver and kidneys are working before anesthesia. Our team will talk with you about whether it is a good idea for your cat.
- Microchip: $31.50 when placed during surgery. Your cat is already asleep, so it is an easy time to add one. Learn more about pet microchipping.
- Cone collar: $16.22 to $38.80, to keep your cat from licking the incision
- Surgical suit: $39.78, a soft alternative to a cone for some cats
- Calming medication: $15 to $45, for cats who get very stressed by car rides or vet visits
Indoor cats get loose more often than people expect. A microchip is one of the simplest ways to help a lost cat find their way home.
Why Spay or Neuter Your Cat?
Beyond preventing litters, spaying and neutering can make life calmer for you and your cat:
- Female cats can go into heat again and again, with loud crying and restlessness. Spaying ends heat cycles.
- Spaying removes the risk of uterine infections and lowers the risk of mammary (breast) tumors, especially when it is done at a young age.
- Neutered male cats are usually less likely to spray urine, roam or fight with other cats.
- It helps reduce the number of unwanted kittens in the Dayton area.
When Should My Cat Be Spayed or Neutered?
Cats can reach puberty surprisingly young, sometimes as early as four months old. Many veterinarians now recommend spaying or neutering cats at around five months of age, before a female's first heat. Adult cats can be spayed or neutered too, and it is never too late to talk about it.
The best timing depends on your cat's health and size, so we will make a recommendation during a visit. A first kitten visit at our clinic is $65 and is a good time to plan vaccines, parasite prevention and surgery timing together.
Getting Your Cat Ready for Surgery
Our team will give you exact instructions before surgery day. In general, plan to:
- Follow the food and water instructions we give you for the night before
- Bring your cat in a secure carrier
- Plan for a quiet space at home for recovery, away from other pets and children
- Ask us about a cone or surgical suit if you think your cat will lick the incision
Recovery at Home
Most cats are back to their usual selves within a few days, but the incision still needs time to heal. Keep your cat calm, limit jumping, and check the incision every day. Call us if you see swelling, redness, discharge, or an opening in the incision, or if your cat stops eating, vomits or seems very low on energy.
